Working for the socio-economic development of the marginalized community

Background of PPSS:
Polly Progati shahayak sangstha (PPSS) is a non-political voluntary social welfare organization working for the marginalized population of the community initiated its activities with a group of volunteers and social workers in an intensive village name Bakai in Laksham Upazila under Comilla district since 2008. Initially it has started its activities providing non formal education to the school drop out children with two non-formal education centers in the village level. The teachers of the non-formal education centers provided their voluntary service from youth group in the community. Before starting the non-formal school in the area family a base line survey of the area conducted by the volunteer teachers. Basing on the survey PPSS initiated the non-formal education center. Basing of the need of the area PPSS started basic health care support for the marginalized families with a special attention to the mothers and children as they are deprived of the basic right of health with a small scale where one trained health worker has been appointed for the basic health services in the village.

With the span of time the management of PPSS applied for the registration to the District Social Service Office, Comilla. PPSS has attained its registration to the Department of Social Service in 2009. Step by step PPSS has extended its activities with a smaller scale for the socio-economic development activities like, distribution of free books and education materials among poor children, family planning activities, raise food production through new technology transfer, provided training to the unemployed youth on income generating activities.

These activities of PPSS focused the attention of the local community and they become interested to extend their support and assistance with the existing local available resources. Different department of the government also extend their full support for the successful implementation of the program. They also guide and provide technical assistance to PPSS time to time. At present PPSS has been operating its activities from the organization’s own fund. PSSS has been selected as implementing NGO of the Department of Women Affairs under the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs to work with the Vulnerable Group Development Program (VGD) for implementation and monitoring of VGD cards of vulnerable women in Laksham, Comilla Sadar Dakkin. Nangalkot and Monohargonj Upazilas of Comilla District, Sonaimuri, Noakhali District. This Project will continue for 42 months ahead of 2016. PPSS has already started its activities at field level since 01 June, 2008 smoothly under the guidelines of the Department of Women Affairs under the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs of GOB.

Aims and objectives of PPSS:
a. To make overall development of the disadvantaged people of the community;
b. To prioritize the comparatively marginalized people living in less advantaged areas;
c. To provide intensive training to the unemployed youth on population control, increase food production to resolve the socio economic problems of the community;
d. To rise voice through human chain development program for the walfare of the community;
e. To undertake development program through establishing an independent research center in the project area.

Goal of PPSS :
To provide all sorts of walfare oriented assistance to the underprivileged, marginalized and deprived community through basic health care, education, mass education, issue based training, low cost housing, promotion of environment, opening of library and charitable hospital in the community.

Working Area of PPSS:
At present it has been implementing its activities in Laksham Upazila under Comilla district and it will extend its program in other upazilas of the district with the prior permission of the registration authority.

Management Structure of PPSS:

• A General Committee is formed for a term of 03 (three) years elected/ nominated by the general members of PPSS usually sit annually.
• An Executive committee consist of 07(Seven) member is formed for a period of 03 (Three) years elected/ nominated by the General Committee members usually sits quarterly.
